Demystifying Daikin Inverter Fault Codes
Daikin inverter air conditioners are among the most reliable HVAC systems in India, but when a fault occurs, technicians frequently encounter either U4 (Transmission Error) or L5 (Outdoor Inverter Compressor Overcurrent). Here is how to isolate the exact cause in under 15 minutes.
Diagnosing Daikin U4 (Communication Failure):
- Terminal Voltage Check: Measure DC voltage between terminals 1 (Live) and 3 (Signal) at the outdoor terminal block. You should observe a pulsating DC voltage fluctuating between 15V and 45V DC.
- Pulsing Voltage Present: Communication pulses are being generated by the indoor board. Inspect outdoor communication optocouplers (PC1, PC2).
- Constant 0V or Constant 30V: The signal line is either open-circuited or the indoor communication transistor is blown.
Diagnosing Daikin L5 (Compressor Inverter Instantaneous Overcurrent):
- Disconnect compressor U, V, W leads from the outdoor board.
- Measure compressor winding resistance across U-V, V-W, and W-U. All three pairs must read identical resistance (typically 0.8Ω to 1.8Ω depending on model capacity).
- Measure mega-ohm resistance to earth ground. Reading must exceed 20MΩ.
- If compressor windings test perfect, the outdoor board IPM or current-sensing shunt resistor is damaged and requires bench lab replacement.
